Abstract

Background: Pharmaceutical care at retail pharmacies plays a pivotal role in promoting rational drug use and enhancing the quality of community healthcare; however, data regarding the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of pharmaceutical care among pharmacists in Can Tho remains highly limited. Objectives: To compare KAP, identify associated factors, and describe the barriers and training needs regarding pharmaceutical care among pharmacists between a ward and a commune in Can Tho. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from February to April 2026 among 111 pharmacists in a ward (n = 80) and a commune (n = 31). KAP scores were converted to a 0 - 100 scale and classified according to Bloom's taxonomy. Results: Knowledge, attitude, and practice scores in the ward were 82.70 ± 6.39, 78.45 ± 12.12, and 89.25 ± 8.23, respectively, and in the commune were 82.58 ± 6.82, 83.14 ± 8.77, and 91.13 ± 7.32. The proportion of overall good KAP in the commune was higher than that in the ward (90.3% vs. 68.8%; p = 0.019). Knowledge updates within the past 12 months and holding a bachelor's/postgraduate degree were positively associated with good KAP (p < 0.05). The primary barrier was customers demanding prescription-only medicines/antibiotics without a prescription (> 80%). Conclusion: KAP levels were relatively good, but gaps remain in certain pharmaceutical care roles.
