Abstract

Background: Five times sit-to-stand (FTSTS) is a useful, inexpensive, and reliable tool commonly used to assess balance and stratify fall risk. However, the hand placement during the test has not yet been evaluated and standardized to optimize measurement. Objectives: To assess the test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of FTSTS of three hand placements: arms crossed over chest, arms by sides and on the thighs in young adults. Materials and method: A cross-sectional study included 54 students, aged  18 - 28 studying at Faculty of Rehabilitation in Hong Bang International University. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Spearman coefficients were used, and p < 0.05 was set to statistically significant. Results: FTSTS with all three hand positions resulted ICC for test - retest reliability were good to excellent [ICC(3,1) =0.82 - 0.90, p < 0.05], and FTSTS was moderate positive correlated with Timed Up and Go Test (rho = 0.42 - 0.49, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test with arms crossed over chest is a valid, highly reliable, and consistant tool for assessing balance.
