Abstract
Background: Ageratum conyzoides L. has been traditionally used in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation, wounds, and bacterial infections. Previous studies have reported the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial activities of its leaves, essential oils, and solvent fractions. However, information on the pharmacognostic characteristics and antibacterial activity of extracts from the aerial parts collected in Vietnam remains limited. Objective: To investigate the botanical characteristics, perform a preliminary phytochemical screening, and evaluate the antibacterial activity of the aerial parts of A. conyzoides. Methods: The aerial parts were examined for macroscopic, microscopic, and powdered drug characteristics, and their moisture and total ash contents were determined according to the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia V. Preliminary phytochemical screening was carried out using standard qualitative chemical tests. The antibacterial activity of the 70% ethanol extract was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 using the agar diffusion method, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined. Results: The macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the crude drug were consistent with the descriptions in the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia V. The moisture content and total ash were 10.09% and 9.09%, respectively, meeting the pharmacopoeial quality requirements. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, alkaloids, and essential oils. The 70% ethanol extract exhibited antibacterial activity against both tested bacterial strains, with MIC values of 0.3125 mg/mL for S. aureus and 0.625 mg/mL for P. aeruginosa. Conclusion: This study provides additional pharmacognostic and antibacterial data on the aerial parts of A. conyzoides. The results indicate that the 70% ethanol extract possesses antibacterial activity against both tested bacteria, with S. aureus being more susceptible than P. aeruginosa.
