Abstract
Background: Effective oral care plays a critical role in the clinical assessment, intervention, and treatment of comatose patients. Furthermore, proper oral hygiene is instrumental in reducing the incidence of hospital - acquired pneumonia (HAP). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 107 fourth-year regular Bachelor of Nursing students at PNTUM in 2022. Objectives:Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding oral care for comatose patients among fourth-year nursing students at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in 2022. Result: The proportions of NS with correct knowledge, a positive attitude, and proper practice regarding OC for CP were 64%, 70.09%, and 44%, respectively. The study identified correlations between knowledge and attitude, differences in OC knowledge across nursing classes, and associations between attitude, gender, and hospital training experience. Discussion: Oral care is a vital component in the management of critically ill patient. Assessing the Knowledge, attitudes, and clinical skills of nursing student regarding this procedure is essential for mitigating the future risk of HAP and enhancing the overall quality of patient care. Conclusion: The Faculty of Nursing and Medical Technology at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine should maintain regular knowledge assessments and organize simulation - based training sessions for oral care on comatose patient. These interventions should be implemented both prior to and during clinical rotations at hospitals.
