Abstract

Background: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, posing a significant health and economic burden. However, research on the treatment costs of glaucoma treatment in Vietnam remains very limited. Objective: To analyse direct medical costs for the treatment of primary glaucoma at the National Eye Hospital in 2024. Participants and methods: The study included 122 patients. The extracted data included patient characteristics and costs. Costs were categorized by disease type, cost components, and treatment methods. Results: The average total direct medical costs were 8,757,383 ± 4,608,920 VND. Inpatient treatment costs accounted for about 64.8%. Surgical and procedural costs, and medication costs, were the two largest expense groups (28.3% and 25.3%). Patients receiving intraocular pressure-lowering medications had significantly higher costs compared to patients receiving only surgical and procedural treatments. Conclusion: The average direct medical cost for treating primary glaucoma at the Vietnam National Eye Hospital is approximately 8,757,383 VND, equivalent to about 7.7% of the GDP per capita. Future studies on glaucoma costs should be conducted across multiple centers and incorporate cost-effectiveness analyses to provide critical data for policymaking and the allocation of healthcare resources.
